Maths

Today we have been learning about fractions and decimals. If the numerator (the number on top) is bigger than the denominator (the number at the bottom) that is called “top heavy fractions” or “improper fractions”. We also learned how to change an improper fractions to a mixed number. We learned a song to remember equivilent fractions. Today, we learned how to change a fraction into a decimal. Now that we have learned how to change fractions into decimals, what is 0.3 as a fraction?

Experiments

  • A clean 16 ounce plastic soda bottle
  • 1/2 cup 20-volume hydrogen peroxide liquid (20-volume is a 6% solution, ask an adult to get this from a beauty supply store or hair salon)
  • 1 Tablespoon (one packet) of dry yeast
  • 3 Tablespoons of warm water
  • Liquid dish washing soap
  • Food coloring
  • Small cup
  • Safety goggles

NOTE: Foam will overflow from the bottle, so be sure to do this experiment on a washable surface, or place the bottle on a tray.

1. Hydrogen peroxide can irritate skin and eyes, so put on those safety goggles and ask an adult to carefully pour the hydrogen peroxide into the bottle.

2. Add 8 drops of your favorite food coloring into the bottle.

3. Add about 1 tablespoon of liquid dish soap into the bottle and swish the bottle around a bit to mix it.

4. In a separate small cup, combine the warm water and the yeast together and mix for about 30 seconds.

5. Now the adventure starts! Pour the yeast water mixture into the bottle (a funnel helps here) and watch the foaminess begin!

MAGIC EGG

Materials you will need:

• A Sink
• Paper Towels
• White Vinegar
• A Hard-Boiled Egg
• A Clean Glass Jar and Lid

Steps:

1.  Place the hard-boiled egg in the glass jar.
2.  Slowly pour in the vinegar until the egg is completely covered.
3.  Screw the lid back on the jar – tightly.
4.  Let this sit for at least one week.
5.  After a week has passed;
6.  Drain the vinegar from the jar.
7.  Dry the egg with a paper towel.

Chocolate Leaves

// Materials you will need:

• Bowl
• Saucepan
• Chocolate
• Pot Holder
• Rose Leaves
• Clean Paintbrush

Steps:

1.  Gather a few rose leaves
2.  Wash the leaves and dry them carefully.
3.  Ash an adult to pour the hot water into the pan.
4.  Carefully place the bowl inside the pan (make sure that the water does not get in the bowl).
5.  Place some of the chocolate in the bowl (the heat from the water will melt the chocolate; it turns into a thick liquid).
6.  Have an adult remove the bowl of chocolate from the pan (with the pot holder) and place it on the table.
7.  Paint the chocolate onto the top of the leaves using the paintbrush

When the chocolate starts to cool, it turns back into a solid and takes on the shape of the leaves.  Peel away the real leaves to reveal the new chocolate leaves.

In Y5, we are learning about Hinduism. Hindus believe in one supreme god, Brahman, but they worship different versions of him. They believe Brahma created the Earth and the people that lived there. Vishnu is the substainer, who created the universe. Another popular god is Ganesh, the elephant headed god. People worship him when they are doing something new. They also celebrate the festival of Diwali, which is the return of Rama, Sita and Lakshmana from the forest. What else do you know about Hinduism?
